Antique
Jewelry: Art Deco Brooches
Bar pins and
plaque brooches were prevalent during the Art Deco era. Their shapes
were primarily geometric, such as variations on the rectangular
form. They were usually made of pierced platinum set with diamonds,
with other gemstones such as emeralds, rubies and sapphires used
as accents to create contrast.
Cartier made
popular the circle brooch, which often featured carved gemstones
such as coral, jade or rock crystal. The carved gemstones were flanked
by designs in diamonds and onyx to complete the Jazz Age look.
Dress clips,
worn singly or in pairs, were an important accessory in Roaring
Twenties society. They were held in place on the garment by a hinge
on the back. A pair of clips could often be joined together to wear
as a brooch.
Art Deco brooches,
like other pieces from this era, are sought after and highly collectible.
Signed pieces from Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef and Arpels and other
designers command high prices at antique jewelry auctions.
