Antique Jewelry:
Asscher Cut Diamonds
Asscher Cut
diamonds were developed in the early 1900s by the Asscher Diamond
Company in Amsterdam. They are typically found in antique jewelry
from the 1910s through the 1930s. Asscher diamonds are highly sought
after today, particularly for engagement rings.
The Asscher
diamond is a step cut diamond, like the emerald cut. In fact, it
is often called a "square emerald cut." However, the configuration
of its facets gives it more brilliance than traditional step cut
diamonds.
The Asscher
diamond has a small table, high crown, deep pavilion and square
culet. The Asscher has a square shape with cut corners, sometimes
giving it an almost octagonal appearance.
Asscher cut
diamonds are found mainly in estate and antique jewelry. Many beautiful
pieces date from the Art Deco era. Antique engagement rings set
with Asscher diamonds are particularly desirable today, and grace
many a celebrity's hand.
Demand has skyrocketed
for these antique diamonds, and they have become increasingly rare.
To fulfill the demand, the Asscher company has re-issued the cut
as the Royal Asscher Diamond. The modern version has wider corners
and more facets than the original. It retains the grace and elegance
of its predecessor, and will certainly be a favorite choice for
engagement rings for many years to come.
