Antique
Jewelry: Edwardian Brooches
Edwardian brooches
and pins usually adhere to a white-on-white color scheme, with diamonds
and pearls set in white gold and platinum. Occasionally, colored
gemstones such as sapphires, aquamarines, amethysts and peridots
are also included.
Many Edwardian
brooches are wonderful examples of the style guirlande, or
"garland style." They depict swags and wreaths of flowers,
leaves, ribbons and bows, from which pearls and diamond briolettes
are sometimes suspended.
Pierced or filigree
plaques were also popular brooch styles. They are typically of a
curved rectangular shape, and contain collet-set diamonds and delicate
millgrain detail.
Bar pins were
another favorite of fashionable Edwardian ladies. These long, narrow
brooches were set with diamonds and seed pearls, and sometimes accented
with enamel and other gemstones. They feature beautiful filigree
designs, and are popular among antique jewelry collectors.
