Antique
Jewelry: Victorian Bracelets
Antique bracelets
from the Victorian era vary greatly in terms of style, but are typically
large in proportion and bold in motif. Most Victorian bracelets
found on the antique jewelry market today are made of yellow gold.
Wide bangles
were particularly popular during the nineteenth century. They often
feature elaborate chasing and engraving. Jewelers experimented with
goldworking techniques from ancient eras; many Victorian bracelets
showcase Etruscan Revival details such as cannetille and granulation.
Some antique
bracelets from this period feature a serpent motif, as it was a
favorite of Queen Victoria. This was believed to be a symbol of
both eternity and good luck.
Hairwork bracelets
also graced the arms of Victorian ladies. Such bracelets were made
primarily of woven or plaited hair (usually that of a loved one)
and finished with gold clasps and fittings.
Flexible gold
bracelets in the shape of garters were also popular, and often worn
in pairs. Other Victorian bracelets feature mosaic plaques linked
together; these mosaics usually depict mythological themes, scenes
of Rome, or flower and nature motifs.
